Decluttering

I am sitting at my dinner table / desk with a nice hot cup of Pukka Night Time Berry tea and I am overly delighted with myself as I am typing these words! 🙂 And.. without further ado…

I have finally pulled my finger out and started decluttering. I have been meaning to do a proper declutter for a while now. I have had a few attempts, I circled around the issue but didn’t really do it properly.

Decluttering is not as easy as it might seem. It is not only recycling, donating, selling, or binning stuff, it’s a whole process of letting go, physically and mentally. You must be in the right space of mind to be able to do that. It is difficult to let go of things that you once loved and brought you joy because all you can think of is how you felt when you first tried the item on, your reflection in the mirror as you swirled around in the tiny fitting room, when you first saw it online or how you felt the first time you wore it on a night out. I am mostly referring to clothing here…

But that was a long time ago. Your style might have changed, your body might have changed too and that item that used to be perfect, is no longer and it has lost its meaning and magic. It’s either sitting untouched at the bottom of a closet, on a shelf, getting in the way when you are looking for something else, or in a vacuum bag under the sofa gathering dust.

I discovered I have so many items of clothing, shoes, or bags that I have completely forgotten about, tucked away in my tiny one bed flat in South-East London, under the sofa, in my two tiny built-in wardrobes or the Ikea boxes under my bed.

I am now on a mission! Code name “Declutter Butterfly“. For the past few months, I have been gravitating towards all these articles online, TV shows or posts on social media which slowly-slowly have sown the decluttering seed and finally got me started on the decluttering path as part of my self-discovery journey.

I have come across a BBC programme called “Sort Your Life Out” which I absolutely love, and binge watched both seasons. Season 3 cannot start soon enough! Stacey Solomon @staceysolom and her team are brilliant, and they do an amazing job helping families transform their homes with a life changing declutter. I am also reading Dilly Carter’s @declutterdollies (member of the Sort Your Life Out team, pro-organiser and founder of Declutter Dollies) book Create Space: Declutter Your Home To Clear Your Mind which has so many useful tips on where to start decluttering your home and how to create that meaningful space we should all be enjoying at home.

Ooohhh, I’m excited! Whoop whoop! I posted my first items on Vinted! For those of you who are not familiar with Vinted, it’s an app where you can sell items you don’t need any more, mostly clothing, shoes, books, and small items. I am now (im)patiently waiting to see how my items are doing and if I will be successful in selling any of them. I like to be prepared, therefore tomorrow I am expecting the Amazon delivery of the postage bags I ordered to ensure I am ready to post asap the items purchased by the buyers! 🙂

I cannot wait to start properly going through my wardrobe (and all the boxes and vacuum bags) to sort out the items I don’t need any more and make room for new items that will bring me the same joy or more as the ones I will be sending off to the buyers who, I am hoping, will enjoy them as much as I did at the time.

To quote my wellness coach, the mantra to go by is “one out, one in”.

I know that this is just a minor step and I have loads to do before I can put my feet up and say that I cleared my home, mind, heart, and soul of all that needed to go but, nonetheless I am excited about what is to come.

I will keep you updated in future posts on how my decluttering endeavours are progressing.

P.S. I almost had a slight heart attack! The wireless was acting up again and wasn’t saving the post… oh my… it did eventually and all is well in the world 🙂
